It is wet and dreary here today, a perfect day to crank the tunes for a little added motivation to paint.

I love the action and movement in my painting Mystic Melody, just as the music flows, loud and strong, or soft and gentle so to does the paintbrush. Strong bold brushstrokes verses small, barely there whispers of color in tune with the mystic melody swirling, moving over and through the painting

A collaborative project between Google + artists +Maude McDonald , +Terrill Welch , +Ardith Goodwin and myself +Melodie Douglas , with photographers +Elia Locardi , +Marisa Williams , and +Mike Brzozowski

Back in September 2011 after seeing a beautiful image of Manarola Italy the above group of artists decided that it would be fun to all create paintings from a selection of images of Manarola. This would showcase how different our styles, techniques and interpretations would be.

Terill requested permission from the select group of photographers Elia, Marisa, and Mike, who so graciously allowed us to use their copyrighted images as our reference photos.

My initial intention was to do my painting in a surrealistic approach, but the brush took over and chose to go it's own way.

The majority of my paintings, both in acrylic, and pastel usually start off with a very detailed drawing which I transfer onto the substrate. In the case of Manarola I instead chose to do a very loose drawing, done with a liner brush and watered down burnt umber straight onto the canvas.

The sky was done with long sweeping brush strokes, with tiny value changes, each stroke closely laid against the last.

"As the brush swishes across the canvas, stroke against stroke, layer upon layer, a calmness descends, i'm in the zone, it just me and the painting! Bliss!"

The ocean was done with the same sweeping brushstrokes but I had to be a little more cautious and use even strokes to allow the water to be calm and quiet. Thin glazes of color were applied on top of the brushstrokes to achieve various depth and light.

There was a wonderful sense of freedom to just go for it, allowing the painting to paint itself and not being caught up in the details.

Resurrecting Blogger - 2012

In 2010 I stopped using blogger andstarted using my blog attached to my my web site

I liked the idea of having everythingunder one roof so to speak but never liked the blog aspect there, Ifound it time consuming to use and very limited in how I could set itup. Pictures had to be resized outside of the program beforeimporting as there was no resizing tool within the blog itself. So here I am back on blogger, if you want to see what I've been doing in the last two years you can still check it out on my web blog

You would think that smaller paintings would be faster to do, but the reality is that for me it takes just as long. The same amount of work takes place regardless of the size.

This was done on canvas which I had covered with acrylic ground for pastels, the texture was quite different from what I normally work on, and at times it seemed almost spongy. I love how the final piece looks.

The Gosling

Mill Lake, a pond in the center of the City of Abbotsford is home to a very large population of Canada Geese. This little fellow is painted from one of the hundreds of images I have taken of the geese and their goslings. I'm looking forward to spring and capturing more images of these adorable babies.

Canada Geese Facts:
Although they are named after Canada as well as inhabiting most of Canada, they are also found in Alaska, and the northern United States, sometimes they also go as far as Greenland.

Next to humans they are the most talkative creature, with the babies talking to their parents while still in the shell.

They are family orientated and mate for life, although if one mate dies the other will re-mate.

Both parents take an active role in parenting.

Seaside Treasures
12" x 12" Kunamokst Mural Panel

Kunamokst means "together" in Chinook. This mural is comprised of 231 12" x 12" wooden panels painted by artists from all over the country coming "together" to create one large mural. The unveiling of the finished mural will be on Galiano Island, BC. In the mean time you can check out the paintings as they are posted to the online grid at http://www.muralmosaic.com/kunamokst.html I am number 47.

The creation of the mural starts with a master image created by Lewis Lavoie, then panels are designated to each artist. We are given a theme, in this case West Coast/ Sea life a few guidelines and a panel with some general shapes on it. We have no idea what the master image is, which makes it all the more amazing when the finished pieces are put together. Make sure you check out the other Murals.
I love going to the ocean and spending hours looking for treasures, there are so many interesting, beautiful items to be found waiting to be photographed and painted. Just like the surprises I find at the ocean I also had a surprise while doing this painting. The baby seal was originally a rock, but at one point I stepped back to view the painting and there he was, looking out at me, a happy surprise

"Fat Free"

I felt like doing something fun with lots of colour, what better then candy! Trying to achieve the translucentness (is this such a word?) in the area where the sun was shinning through the jujubes created a bit of a challenge. It's always such a thrill when you finally get down the exact colours and it works.

This will be part of the upcoming Abbotsford Downtown Art Walk. My art will be shown at Gabby's on Montrose Ave. More details on the show to follow.

The Sasquatch is for an upcoming show with a theme of "Stories I Have Been Told" Not quite my usual style but I believe that it's always good for me to step outside of my comfort zone. As is quite normal for me i'm finishing this at the last minute and have to get it dropped off today.

The Sasquatch

Growing up in the village of Harrison Hot Springs surrounded by vast mountains and deep dense forests we were often told stories of the Sasquatch.

A large hairy beast described as being twice as big as the average man, with very long arms, a nose that was spread across his face, and a body that was covered by hair much like an animal.

Over the years there have been many sightings of the Sasquatch. The following is one account of a Sasquatch sighting.

A man was fishing from his canoe on Morris Creek, a tributary of the Harrison when a rock struck the water so close to his canoe that he was drenched by the splash. Looking up he saw a huge hairy man on the bank above him, he watched as the beast threw another rock at him. This also barely missed the canoe; he paddled away with great speed.

An interesting side note to this story is that Morris Creek was known as Saskakau when the white man first arrived, and is so called on old maps. In this region it is said that there were two large bands of Sasquatch which fought a long time ago until both were brought almost to extinction.

As you walk in the forest do you sometimes feel that someone or something is watching you?

Does the Sasquatch still exist or was it just a mythical creature?

I find the naming of my paintings is much more of a struggle then the actual painting. I'm still intriqued by this black and white fabric, I love the different patterns created when the sun lays across it and the challenge of painting it. Eventually i'll have to try doing one of these black and white ones in pastel. It would be a real challenge trying to keep the black and white separate but the bold rich colors of the pastels on black and white would be stunning.

It's not to often you will see me doing a landscape as I seem to have a fear of them but I actually had fun doing this one it flowed so easily. Maybe i've just been so inspired by all the glorious colors this fall, plus the reference photo for this was stunning in itself.

The second stage is the scary stage as I will soak the painting in water and scrub off the gum arabic. I really like it at this point and would hate to ruin it. After I wash it, the painting will need to dry for a couple of days.

Turtle & Koi came about from the Weekend Drawing Event on Wet Canvas hosted by EP. Every weekend on Wet Canvas the host person posts 16 pictures, we then have 30 mins to select an image then 2 hours to sketch, paint, digitize or basically do what ever we want to the picture then post it at the two hour mark. It's a time to just relax and have fun and sometimes to push yourself to try something different.

This one has been one of those ones that took me ages to finish but finally it is off the easel. The original photo was taken during a short boat cruise in celebration of my good friends 25th anniversaryfrom Seattle Washington to Vancouver BC. It was early october and we were all sitting outside on the boat deck enjoying the sun, good company, and beer. The sun shining thru the beer and green bucket completely caught my eye and I knew I had to paint it.

Sorry for the delay in posting, I have been painting and drawing but haven't had anything worthwhile posting (or completed, the procrastination bug hit me).

I've had this idea in my head for quite some time now to do a series of paintings based on Martini names, this is No.1 of the series. This will also be one of the paintings I will be submitting in the upcoming FV Graphic Guild Show "Something Red" Hope you like it!

Another in my glass collection. It was interesting working with the two contrasting materials, the hardness of glass and the fluidness of the satin. You have the hard edges of the glass but the satin is all fluid and motion, it pools rather then stiffens. It was a good exercise in working with values.

A little more done on the first bottle and the ornament. For some reason when I take my reference photos in to be developed regardless how I crop or resize them the bottoms seem to be cut off, which is what I am dealing with in this painting. My plan is to download the image onto my laptop once I am to that point and paint from there.

SNEEK PEEK

This is what i'm currently working on. I've been collecting some bluey/green bottles of various shapes with the intention of doing a painting, included is a small greenish leaded glass oranament and a large fabric ornament. I love the challenge of painting glass with objects showing thru from the back.

Dakota Art Supplies Visit
Yahoooooooo New Toys!!!! Last week I ordered the new set of Great American half stick pastels and the Unison set of 8 shadow colors from Dakota Art Supplies. The Mt. Vernon store shipped them down to the Bellingham store and I picked them up yesterday. There was about a 1/2 hour wait to cross the border heading into the states which isn't to bad when compared to the 2 to 3 weeks I have to wait when it is coming via the postal system. To have them shipped will usually cost around 30 to 40 dollars, which more then covered the cost of the gas to go down. So i'm a happy camper!!! The Bellingham store had a small sellection of open stock pastels and pastel pencils, both the La Carte and Wallis papers, plus some other papers and miscellaneous pastel art items. After picking up the pastels we wandered around the downtown area hit the Saturday Farmers Market where I took loads of pictures for future paintings, then drove over to the Fairhaven district, if you haven't been there its a lovely area with lots of nice shops and some interesting history.

Latest update on the paper strawberry. It finally has its little hat on, I needed a bit of a break from all that red. I've also put on many layers to even out the paint. Next weekend is the studio tour and I am hoping to have it done by then.
Nice thing about acrylic is the I don't have to worry about the framing.

Oriental Solitude

Another one of my Chinese Lanterns paintings. I find that the colors in this pastel version are much more vibrant then in the acrylic "Lit Up" version of chinese lanterns that I recently painted. I do find that it is much easier to get a nice range of values with the pastels.

Chinese Lantern Plant -common name for a herbaceous perennial (a plant that lives at least three years) grown in gardens for its showy fruit. It is native to southeastern Europe and Japan and can survive winter temperatures as low as -40° C (-40° F). In colder regions, it is grown as an annual (a plant that lives one growing season). It gets its name from the calyx, the balloon-like, papery, red covering over the fruit, which resembles a Chinese paper lantern. It is also called winter cherry, strawberry tomato, and alkekengi.

Art studio tour helps celebrate culture week

This piece, called Sensuous Beauty, was created by artist Melodie Douglas.

Abbotsford artists are opening their studios to the public on Saturday, April 26 as part of a new tour.
This Art Studio Tour – in celebration of BC Arts and Culture Week – is brought to the public by the Abbotsford Spirit of BC office which seeks to promote local artists, educate all who come, and make art accessible to everyone.
The Art Studio Tour will provide a rare opportunity for visitors to interact with the artists and see their artwork at the source – the artist’s own studio.
The event stats at Kariton Gallery at 11 a.m., and continues via a guided bus tour where art enthusiasts will be given a behind-the-scenes glimpse into artists’ creative worlds.
Tours include transportation, guided commentary and finally a reception to delight your senses provided by: Lotusland Vineyards, ChocolaTas, Tega Red Tea Infusion, Birchwood Dairy’s Inc. and Tanglebank Country Gardens.
Participating artists are: Gwen Gregorig, Stella Johnson, Irene Enns, Norm Williams, Robert Williams, Melodie Douglas, Christopher Friesen, Neil Lowen and Bente Hansen.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling Sherry at the Abbotsford Spirit of B.C. office 604-850-7161. Seating for this event is limited.
Artists:
One of the nine artists involved in this tour is Melodie Douglas, a self taught artist born and raised in the Fraser Valley and currently residing in Abbotsford.
She started developing her artistic skills in 1995 when she was introduced to decorative art and tole painting. From there she went on to open up a painting studio/retail store, where she taught various techniques related to decorative art using acrylic paints painted on furniture, metals, canvas, glass and candles.
Wanting to develop her skills further she took various drawing classes at UCFV both in graphite and charcoal.
Her current medium of choice is soft pastels, which she first started in 2005. She immediately was hooked on the medium, both for the ease of use, beautiful vibrant colors and the ability to manipulate the paint with a simple swipe of color.
Also participating in the tour is valley artist Christopher Friesen.
Born in Chilliwack, Friesen now considers himself to be from Abbotsford.
He attended UCFV for a diploma in Visual Arts and says that he feels “in love with painting and photography but settled on painting.”
Friesen is now a painting professor in visual arts at UCFV.
“I believe that Abbotsford will in the future become a place of culture, it has been a long up hill battle with getting the arts in Abbotsford recognized but with new facilities and a new visual arts building that now offers a BFA degree, Abbotsford should start to see more artist start to stay instead of move away,” he stated.
As for his works, Friesen said in a written statement:
“Challenging the materials and conceptions is what art should be about. I do not set out to paint a pretty

Blowing in the Wind or Strawberry Fields Forever??? WIP

I took some photos of these paper strawberries that decorated a booth at the annual Abbotsford Berry Festival last year, I loved how the light played on them as the wind gently blew them around. I debated between painting this in pastel or acrylic, I wanted to paint it using my yummy Terry Ludwig red pastels (they are my favorites) butI also knew that I wanted to do this as a large painting, so I opted to do it in acrylic as my paper size for La Carte pastel paper is limited to about 19" x 25". You never know I might just do a smaller version in Pastel. I thought about naming it "Comedy of Errors" as I struggled remembering all the ins and outs of using acrylics.

Lit Up

My first attempt at acrylics in a number of years. I also tried a grisaille underpainting for the first time which was very interesting. The advantage of acrylics for me is not having to frame them, disavantage is washing all those brushes, I had forgotten that I like to use every brush I own when I paint grrrrrr ! Which is fine at the time but really sucks when it comes to wash up.

I've had a couple of photo sessions with my gumball machine, finally i've gotten around to painting one. I wasn't quite ready to do a full picture....yikes all those gumballs!! lol. So here is a tight crop. Keeping things round when using large pastels can be a challenge but it was such fun building up each gumball to achieve the roundness.

Taste of Summer??
I haven't really decided on a name for this one. Any ideas?? I love painting glass, shiny objects and reflections. These berries presented a challenge but were fun to do. The trip out to find and pick the blackberries turned into a bit of an adventure when I saw a field of flowers, not just any old field of flowers but my very favorite gladolias. In my excitement, I jumped out of the car, camera ready.....slammed the door shut and realized I had locked my keys in the car. OH OH lol. I will be much more careful in the future.

On a trip to Florida I had the opportunity to meet up with a long time internet friend. We exchanged little gifts, my gift to her was a small round jewelry box that I painted and her gift to me were shells from the ocean near her place.

I've always been fasinated by natures treasures, often picking up and bringing home shells, rocks, leaves, nuts, feathers, little odds and ends that might one day be in one of my paintings.

I saw these lovely peaches in the grocery store, I loved the hints of red and purple in them. They just cried out for me to paint them. They have been posed everywhich way with a multitude of props, in time to come you will see a bigger painting of them. My first one a day small painting. The inspiration for this painting came while I was rummaging around in my attic. I came across a old set of salt and pepper shakers that belonged to my grandmother. While painting this I took a stroll down memory lane, what a wonderful nostalgic trip.

Climbing to the TopMy style of painting is usually realistic, but I love loose impressionistic style paintings. This is my attempt at loosening up, it didn't really happen lol. I loved the ladybug, when I took the reference picture at the Yarrow Apple Farm, I didn't even notice her at first, she was yellow and black and blended right in. Using artist licence I changed her to red so she would pop out more.

Last night I wanted to do something quick and loose, I loved the bright colors of the cheetos bag that I was munching from. It turned out not so quick but it was fun to do and I did resist from eating them while I was painting. 7" x 7" pastel.

My purpose with this blog is to share my Artistic Endeavors, hence the name. I will post what I am currently working on, some works in progress, sketches, and studies. My goal is to post a painting a day although at my painting speed this might be a impossibility lol. I'll also be posting about upcoming local art happening and shows that i'm in.
